Mainland Scholar Renounces All Communist Affiliations Print E-mail
Individual Statement - Scholars

After reading the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party, a renowned Chinese scholar announced his statement on the Epoch Times’ website to quit the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with his real name. He also declared his resignation of all his official academic positions.

In Sun Junyan’s statement quitting the CCP, published on January 7, 2009, he said, “I am ashamed of being a member of the CCP! I have decided to quit the CCP and all my official academic positions in the mainland.”

Sun was an associate professor at the Department of Psychology of the Capital Normal University for ten years. His Ph.D. dissertation was the first Ph.D. dissertation in the field of psychology history in China.

Sun taught training courses to young teachers in universities and colleges in Beijing for eight years. He also lectured to several thousand middle and elementary school teachers from all over the country.

He was an honored expert at the Beijing High School Teacher Training Center, a counselor at the Sino-American Institute for Transpersonal Studies, a member of the China Psychological Society, and an editor of the Psychological Exploration magazine.

In 2008, funded by the government, Sun went to the University of Hawaii as a visiting scholar and did research on religious psychology.

Sun told the Epoch Times, “The government wanted to effectively control, manage, and use religious groups and individuals through means of scientific research in religious psychology. The purpose was to establish an effective management model to maintain its so-called social stability and its current dictatorship ruling system, and to provide psychological evidence for the government to control and suppress people and religious groups.”

“Science is a free undertaking and is not supposed to provide services to the Party, especially to become an accomplice of a dictating regime. I should not work with such a regime. Cooperation with the regime may be beneficial for me, but it is trivial. I cannot accept such a thing in front of truth and justice,” said Sun.

After reading attorney Gao Zhisheng’s article “Dark Night, Dark Hood, and Kidnapping by Dark Mafia,” Sun believed what Gao said in his letters to be true. “With evidence such as Yang Jia’s case and many others, I believe attorney Gao’s experience. In a civilized world today, it’s hard to imagine such brutal torture exists.”
