In the 1950, when China mainland was taken over by the Communist Party, the domino effects have also affected North Korea, Laos, and Vietnam. For the next half a century, series of wars instigated by the Communists happened all over Asia, Korea, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Hundred millions of people were killed. The Khmer Rouge with its genocidal regime caused deaths to 1.5 millions of its own people. Close to a million Vietnamese drowned in the South China Sea, trying to escape the Communist regime. Mass murder, widespread slave labor, and human rights violations being committed daily. Poverty, starvation, pollution, diseases, poor health care, poor education became the big picture with daily arrests of dissidents in all communist countries. In 1985, the Soviet Union was blessed with Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), leading to the abandonment of Communism in 1991 in the Soviet Union. Sadly, in 1989, China was still under the curse of its own CCP with the bloody tragedy at Tiananmen Square, where the young students were crushed under military tanks and machine guns. This was an unforgettable page of history being watched by the whole world. The same situation is happening today with Tibet and Burma. Today, 2009, twenty years from that date, the world is watching on with admiration the undying fighting spirit for democracy of the Chinese people. Not one tank man, but fifty millions of Chinese have renounced the Communist Party. You are not alone. President Obama has clearly made the statement in his inauguration speech: "To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."On behalf of the Vietnamese Americans who came to this country in search for freedom, I congratulate the Chinese People in your step forward to set yourself free. President Obama has proclaimed on his inauguration speech: “We will face down communism not with missiles or tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions." We are with you. Vietnamese community in Washington DC, MD and VA is with you. United we stand for Freedom and Democracy in our home countries. United we fight for Human Rights for Chinese and Vietnamese people, who have suffered under communist regimes. This is the time for changes. Together, we will create a new era for China and Vietnam. Genie Giao Nguyen is Vice Chair of the Vietnamese Community of Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
